Warning of ripe conditions for pandemic virus

Experts warn that conditions are ripe in Asia to spark the next human flu pandemic: the H5N1 virus is already endemic and evolving in both domestic and wild birds in Asia and is becoming more virulent; it has already infected and killed some people who had close contact with birds, and has been found in pigs - the ideal 'mixing vessels' for bird and human flu viruses to swap genetic material to produce a lethal virus able to spread rapidly from person to person; other animals also have the potential to serve as mixing vessels.

Keeping vigil: surveillance under the spotlight

The H5N1 virus has already 'jumped' from birds to humans, and in one case of bird flu may have passed directly from one person to another, but this may not be the only such case, nor the last. Poor facilities and infrastructure means that the true extent of human infection in Asia remains unknown. Scientists and public health officials are attempting dramatic improvements in the scale and quality of surveillance, so as to track H5N1 and other influenza virusesmore precisely, and detect the beginnings of any future pandemic.

Lessons from history: past pandemics

Investigation of past human flu pandemics is giving clues to revealing both the origins of pandemic influenza viruses and their evolutionhow they evolved. Like the H5N1 virus that is currently circulating in Asia, the 1918 'Spanish Flu' pandemic virus may have originated from birds in China.
